Year in Code is an open-source web application for generating a visual coding-year recap. It offers two separate paths: entering a GitHub username to inspect public contribution data, or supplying a Claude Code usage JSON file produced with ccusage. The resulting report can show activity patterns, streaks and a shareable summary, with GitHub mode also presenting a view of time since the first public commit it finds.
The privacy behavior depends on the mode. GitHub mode fetches public activity through a contribution-data API, while the project's documentation says Claude Code JSON is processed in the browser rather than uploaded to its servers. Private repository activity and unrecorded work are not made visible merely by entering a username, so the report is not a complete measure of a developer's output or career. Supported file formats and year selection also matter when exporting usage data. Year in Code is most useful as a personal retrospective or shareable snapshot, rather than as a performance assessment of a person or team. Its source is available for inspection and self-hosted development.
