An unofficial Signal client for terminal workflows

About faro

faro is an independent, open-source Signal client for macOS and Linux terminals. It links to an existing Signal account as a secondary device, so a phone remains the primary device. Keyboard navigation, a command palette, configurable themes and chat-list controls are designed for people working in terminals, tmux or SSH sessions. The website includes a browser demonstration with fictional contacts so users can inspect the interface before linking an account.

The project uses presage and Signal's libsignal library rather than implementing its own cryptography. That does not make it an official or Signal-supported client. The site explicitly lists limits: no Windows version, no voice or video calls, no stories and no transfer of history from before linking. Local keys and history are permission-restricted but are not yet encrypted at rest. The software is distributed under AGPL-3.0, and optional remote transcription and update checks are off by default. It fits terminal-focused users willing to consider the support and storage tradeoffs of an unofficial linked client.
