About runspace

runspace is a command-line tool and MCP server for running work in disposable GitHub Codespaces. A local binary creates a Codespace from a pushed repository branch, sends commands to it and retrieves output or a patch. The intended separation is between the host machine running the client and the remote environment running installs, builds and tests. The source is offered under the MIT license, but the underlying Codespaces resources can incur charges to the account that creates them.

The CLI and MCP interface expose the same operations, including creating a space, executing a command, copying files, listing spaces, collecting a diff and deleting the space. A one-shot run operation creates an environment, runs a command, returns its exit status and removes the environment. Longer workflows can keep a space alive while work is inspected and then take all changes since creation back as one patch. The homepage links to prebuilt releases and documentation for Linux, macOS and Windows.

The project publishes important limits alongside the workflow. It relies on an undocumented Codespaces connection protocol, requires an SSH-capable development container and waits for checkout rather than completion of repository setup commands. Remote code can access the internet and the Codespace's repository token, so a disposable environment should not be confused with a complete security boundary. The documentation recommends a dedicated identity and repository for agent use, reviewing returned patches and deleting remaining spaces. A patch can contain changes to hooks, CI or symlinks and should be inspected before application. runspace is therefore a way to move execution and collect changes, not a guarantee that untrusted code becomes harmless or that cloud resources are free.

Perfect for

Developers using GitHub Codespaces for temporary command execution or coding-agent work.

Solves these problems

Separating remote execution from a local client and bringing changes back as a patch.
