Every cycle, founders delay applying to Y Combinator because they are unsure what happens next. YC's own apply page answers most of it plainly, and it is worth reading before the deadline rather than after. Here is the shape of the current cycle, from YC's published information.

Deadlines and decisions

For the Winter 2027 batch, the on-time deadline is November 2 at 8pm PT. Apply by then and YC promises a decision by December 11. You can apply after the deadline - YC says it will still consider late applications - but it cannot promise when you will hear back. YC's own advice is to submit as soon as you are ready rather than polishing until the last day. Founders aiming at a later cycle can also apply for future batches through Early Decision.

The interview

If your application looks promising, YC invites you to interview. Most interviews happen by video conference during November and December. Two things on the page stand out: YC says it typically makes decisions the same day as the interview, and it gives everyone who interviews detailed feedback on the decision. Even a no comes with signal you can use.

Funding starts at acceptance

A common misconception is that the investment arrives with the batch. YC states it invests in companies as soon as they are accepted, months before the program begins. The batch itself - for Winter 2027, January to March - takes place in person at YC's San Francisco campus, opening with a three-day kick-off and continuing with regular meetups.

What the three months include

Each company works with a dedicated YC General Partner in a direct Slack channel, with weekly meetings. Batches are split into small, autonomous groups that have dinner together weekly, a structure YC compares to university houses. Guest speakers are drawn from alumni - YC names the founders of OpenAI, Airbnb, Stripe and DoorDash as regulars. Companies also get access to more than $12M in free credits and deals from partners including OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS, Google Cloud, Azure and Stripe, and YC introduces founders to its investor network toward the end of the batch.

Before you submit

Two practical notes follow from the timeline. First, because decisions for on-time applications are promised by December 11, anything your application claims should be true and checkable now - there is little room for "we will have launched by then." Second, because interviews come within weeks of the deadline, be ready to talk about the company on short notice: the same-day decision policy means there is no slow evaluation queue to hide in. YC encourages applying as soon as you are ready, and the mechanics back that up.

The page's closing point is that YC does not end after three months - support and the alumni network continue for the life of the company. If you are on the fence for Winter 2027, the cost of applying is an application; the cost of waiting is a cycle.
